Ski-touring in Norway, Easter 2006

On the 12th of April 2006 me, Kuju, VilleR and VilleS packed ourselves and our gear in VilleS's Volvo and headed up norht from Helsinki. We drove all the way to the Arctic Sea and then turned left. Our destination was Lyngen, a peninsula in Northern Norway. Our plan was to spend five days ski-touring in the Norweigian mountain, glacier and fjord scenery. The trip was magnificent!

We rented a cabin in a village called Stromso. The cabin had all the luxuries we could imagine such as running water, beds, a stove and even a sauna-house next to the cabin. One nigh we spent in tents next to the glacier. That way we could hop on our skis straight from bed. From the cabin we had to drive 5-30 kilometers to find the best entry spots to the mountains.

The weather cherished us, the sun was shining every day and the temperature was mild, from -5 degrees celsius morning freeze to +10 in the sunniest spots during day. It had not been snowing for a couple of weeks so we did not get ourselves into serious powder snow. Nevertheless, we got some awesome runs in the various hills and gullys of the glaciers and mountains.

No doubt, we will go back to Lyngen again. There was just so much good backcountry skiing to do in Lyngen Peninsula. And the scenery, photos just don't do justice. You have to go there to know what I'm talking about! Only small downside to the trip was the Norwegian alcohole policy. During Easter time the local shop was not allowed to sell beer for us.
